The Information Governance framework

A way to describe whether an information environment supports independent judgement without prescribing what anyone should conclude.

Information Governance is the shared stewardship of the conditions under which public knowledge is produced, verified, preserved, made accessible, connected and corrected.

The five functions

Original reporting

First-hand knowledge enters public view: someone goes, asks, records and publishes what was not previously on the record.

Verification

Claims are tested before they circulate, and the test leaves a trace a reader can inspect.

Context

A fact is placed among the facts that qualify it: its scale, trend, history and dispute.

Diverse perspectives

Partial views remain within reach of one another, with enough shared evidence for disagreement to stay intelligible.

Synthesis

Separate accounts are drawn together into the state of a question rather than merely the state of its coverage.

If you choose to be remembered, your name, organisation, email and contact preferences are stored in this browser for 180 days. Later download requests reuse those details. Use “Forget my details” in the footer to remove them from this browser. This does not delete your previous submissions.
